Expected Outcomes of the 2003 Assembly

Since Assembly 2000 there has been an erroneous perception abroad in the UCA that there is a six year moratorium on discussing faith and sexuality, especially in relation to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people.  Not only is this perception wrong, it has placed a heavy burden on such members and ministers, their families and, at time, their congregations.  It is unjust and uncaring to say to any person or group- we are not going to talk about the issues that affect, so profoundly you and us.  The silence needs to be broken for the sake of those who suffer most because of it and for the health of the church. It is time for the church to care for all its members by returning to respectful and prayerful dialogue.

Friends of Unity hopes that this Assembly will request the Assembly Standing Committee and the in-coming President to initiate a 3 year process across the UCA that enables the church, in its congregations, councils and faith communities, to enter again into dialogue on faith and sexuality.  Such a process would build on and extend the Retreats held prior to Assembly 2000 and requires the Assembly’s leadership resourcing.

Also, since Assembly 2000, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people have been subjected to vilification and harassment by individuals and groups within the church.  Complaints about this behaviour have not always been given the attention that we believe justice requires.  A policy on the Prevention of Vilification and harassment has now been prepared which spells out clearly that such attitudes and behaviours are unjust, contrary to the gospel and destructive of individuals and of Christian community.  FOU wants this Assembly to ensure that, as a matter of urgency, Assembly Standing Committee prepares procedures and educational resources to enable all congregations, councils and agencies to implement this policy.

FOU hopes that Assembly 2003 enables its members to pray, reflect, listen and learn from God and each other about how the UCA can do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with God!  We hope the decisions of the Assembly will assist this to happen across the whole Church.
